Days of Our Lives Leaves NBC For Peacock

Days of Our Lives only has a little over a month as NBC only remaining soap opera. The 57-year-old soap will be making the move to Peacock permanently on September 12, 2022, following the success of Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem.

Days of Our Lives Changes Everything

Some can say “and then there were three” with only three broadcast network soaps remaining as of September, but how long will that even last with the advent of streaming? Right now, DAYS will be the first soap to try this permanently.

This programming shift benefits both Peacock and NBC and is reflective of our broader strategy to utilize our portfolio to maximize reach and strengthen engagement with viewers,” NBCUniversal Television and Streaming chairman Mark Lazarus said in an official statement.

“With a large percentage of the Days of Our Lives audience already watching digitally, this move enables us to build the show’s loyal fanbase on streaming while simultaneously bolstering the network daytime offering with an urgent, live programming opportunity for partners and consumers.”

Days of Our Lives History

Days of Our Lives premiered on November 8, 1965, as a half-hour soap and eventually expanded to an hour in the 1970s when most soaps did. During its 1980s heyday, the network also aired Santa Barbara and Another World, but for a while was also joined by Sunset Beach, Generations, and Passions. Since Passions was canceled in 2008, DOOL has been the only soap NBC has aired but soon that will be no more.

Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem seems like an experiment to see if people would watch the goings on with their favorite characters on streaming and one has to wonder how long this was the plan. How will fans feel about having to pay for a streaming channel to see a soap they have watched most of their lives? That’s the question on everyone’s mind as the soap industry waits to see if this will breathe new life into the soap or be its death knell.

Currently, DAYS tapes at least six months in advance so whatever will air on Peacock starting next month was originally intended for NBC — or so we think as there is no telling how long this has been in the works. Another question that remains is whether Peacock will make a deal to stream in Canada or risk losing millions of viewers.
