British Royal News: Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Criticized For Multi-Million Dollar Spotify Deal
According to Page Six, many musicians are voicing their displeasure over the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s deal to producer ‘woke’ podcasts with their company, Archewell Audio. As a matter of fact, Paul McCartney, Chris Martin, Kate Bush, Robert Plant and Stevie Nicks called on the UK government this week to reform the way musicians are paid when their songs are streamed online. That’s because many are being paid less than a penny per stream.
And while some people at Spotify believe that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s deal will somehow help struggling musicians by getting more people on the site, others don’t seem to believe so.
I’ve been writing songs since I was 12 years-old,” singer-songwriter Callum Gardner told Britain’s The Star. “I don’t get paid from Spotify, it’s never broken even from the money I used to put songs on Spotify. It’s hard, I don’t know what we are supposed to do because they have all the power and somehow all of the artists have all agreed.”
British Royal News: Musicians Are Upset About The Deal
Another young musician by the name of Harrison Rhys says that Harry and Meghan’s $25 million dollar deal feels like a kick to the teeth. He said, “I believe what Spotify have done is unethical, we are only being paid £0.0038 [about half a cent] per stream but they are able to pay out what is probably a multimillion-dollar fee to Harry and Meghan.
So far Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not made any comments about the criticism, but at this point it’s doubtful that they will. The couple have also signed a multi-million dollar deal with Netflix, making them the richest royal couple around right now.
