Speaking to Soap Opera Digest in a new interview, Elia says that when she found out that she had been cast to play a cop on Days of Our Lives, she got excited almost immediately. That’s because it has always been one of the roles that she’s wanted to play.

Elia also said that playing a baddie is something that is simply in her blood. She said, “I definitely have a tough girl in me. That’s just innate. Plus, I come from a background in sports. That also helps to keep me tough. It was foreign in other ways. I’ve never been a police officer. So it was foreign to get certain verbiage down, like the Miranda rights and things like that, and handling handcuffs.”

The actress was also asked if she had to memorize the Miranda Rights before she took on her role. She said, “I did have to memorize them, absolutely. That wasn’t too tough. Because of the arrests she’s been making lately, I’ve been having to say them full out.”

Elia also admitted that she did a little bit of research in order to make her character a more realistic cop. She said, “I did a lot of YouTube research on holding a gun and the proper stance when you’re holding a gun — how to hold a rescue position versus when you’re actually ready to shoot it. I also looked at a lot of TV shows, women I admired who played positions like this. Regina King played a cop, Jennifer Lopez …”
