Lucas believed that Sami needed to be kept away from her estranged husband EJ DiMera (Dan Feuerriegel). Lucas believes that Sami belongs with him. Sami and EJ were having trouble with their marriage. EJ had found out that Sami had cheated on him with Lucas. EJ believed that Sami had left Salem to get distance from him. Lucas had decided that he would kidnap Sami to keep her away from EJ.

Sami was able to make contact with her daughter Allie Horton (Lindsay Arnold). Lucas was with Allie when Sami called her. Lucas went to bring Sami back to Salem. Lucas decided to frame EJ for kidnapping Sami. EJ went to jail for a short time but evidence came to light that exonerated him. Lucas has felt guilt over kidnapping Sami. Lucas is worried that Sami will find out the truth about her kidnapping.

Lucas was forced to tell Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn) that he kidnapped Sami because Chad caught him framing EJ. Lucas was able to get Chad to agree to keep his secret. Lucas turned to his mother Kate Roberts (Lauren Koslow) to help him with Chad. Kate found out that Chad had told his late wife Abigail Deveraux DiMera (Marci Miller) that Lucas kidnapped Sami. Abigail was close to finding out the truth about Sami’s kidnapping.

Chad told Kate that he told Abigail the truth. Kate informed Lucas that Abigail knew that he had kidnapped Sami. Lucas decided that he would start to drink again when he found out that Chad had told Abigail about Sami’s kidnapping. Lucas was distressed to find out that Abigail knew about his crime. Lucas woke up after drinking and found that he had hurt his hand. Lucas found out that Abigail had been murdered. Lucas is afraid that he may have been the one that killed Abigail.
