According to reports released by the Palace, he died peacefully in his sleep. The Queen also entered mourning for her husband’s death on the same day and will not carry out any royal duties for the 8 days that it will last.

The Queen mourns her husband of 73 years

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the statement released by the Buckingham Palace read.

Prince Philip recently returned home after spending time at the hospital because of an infection and a pre-existing heart condition. It was a severe hit on the 99-year-old royal, and at the time, there were fears for his life. But he got better and was discharged from the hospital, so he was able to die peacefully at his home, with people that loved him and that he loved.

The royal, who was born in 1921, would have turned 100 in June this year. For over seven decades he served steadfastly by his wife’s side, being supportive of his wife and aiding her in any way he could. His marriage to Queen Elizabeth is the longest surviving marriage in the history of the royal family. Their marriage suffered and survived a war, family upheaval and unrest, and everlasting scrutiny from the public eye.

“He has quite simply been my strength and stay all these years,” the Queen said of him in 1997, and has echoed the same sentiments through the coming years. “I owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim.”

The Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, faced challenges when she wanted to marry Prince Philip, but they supported each other and they saw themselves through. It’s almost like a “look at what they didn’t miss” moment. Prince Philip was forced to give up his “Prince” title at the time in order to be able to marry Princess Elizabeth, but Elizabeth later gave him back what he lost to be with her when she became the ruling monarch.

They had just been married for two years when Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, died and Elizabeth the second ascended to the throne of England.

Theirs have been a love that started in their teenage years and continued for so many years, despite all they had to go through together.

The Royal Family Mourns Prince Philip

The Palace released a statement regarding Prince Philip’s death: “During the coronavirus pandemic, and in light of current government advice and social distancing guidelines, modified funeral and ceremonial arrangements for His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh are being considered by Her Majesty The Queen. Details will be confirmed in due course.

“With the safety and wellbeing of the public in mind, and in accordance with government guidelines, members of the public are asked not to gather in crowds. Those wishing to express their condolences are asked to do so in the safest way possible, and not to gather at Royal Residences.

“During this time the Royal Family ask that members of the public consider making a donation to a charity instead of leaving floral tributes in memory of The Duke of Edinburgh. An online Book of Condolence for those who wish to leave messages is available on the Royal website.

“Union flags have been half-masted at all Royal residences flying the Union flag. The Royal Standard will continue to fly at Windsor Castle where The Queen is in residence.”

The Duke of Edinburgh wished that he will get a royal ceremonial funeral and not a state funeral, which means that his body will not lie in state. The late Duke lived a long life and people from around the world are remembering him for the services he offered to the world, his nation, his family, and to his wife especially.
