Deon and Karen Derrico, featured in Doubling Down with the Derricos, say they’ve never received government assistance. Based on how the Derrico Family handle their finances and Deon’s career as a real estate investor, they will probably never need help from the government. However, that hasn’t stopped people from assuming the Derricos “must be” on welfare. Keep reading for more Doubling Down With The Derricos news.
Deon & Karen Derrico Waited Until They Could Afford Kids
In multiple interviews before the season premiere of Doubling Down with the Dericcos, as well as it being stated in the first episode, one thing was made clear. Deon and Karen Derrico waited to have children until they could afford to raise them.
TLC Doubling Down With The Derricos: Deon Derrico’s Career
The patriarch of Doubling Down with the Derricos is a real estate investor. People in this career field have pretty hefty incomes. However, income alone does not make it feasible for some families to support a large number of children. What is even more important than your paycheck is whether you are financially responsible and how you spend that money.
Doubling Down with the Derricos: Always Frugal
Even though the Derricos look like they live in a nice house, it’s not a mansion. Each child does not have their own bedroom. They don’t have a line-up of fancy cars, either. We have seen Deon and Karen take their children places in an older model white van.
Plus, they do their own haircuts and make wise financial choices. This cuts down on unnecessary expenses so they have the money to pay their mortgage, health insurance, maintenance costs and of course, the $3,500 a month grocery bill to feed 14 children.
Derrico Family News: No Government Assistance
The Derricos have stated on multiple occasions that they have never received government assistance. While some find that hard to believe, those of us that knew super-sized families growing up have seen how it is possible. Those that have several children but don’t earn a great living do a lot of scrimping and saving. Some work multiple jobs, others have parents who work opposite shifts so no daycare is necessary.
Not everyone is on government assistance and believe it or not, some families don’t believe in welfare at all. The Derricos go through how they can raise 14 children on Deon’s income and how they make it work without receiving help in each episode. They also manage to keep their house exceptionally clean, the children are all well-behaved and they have routine and structure, which cuts down on the stress levels.
