Doubling Down With The Derricos: How Deon and Karen Get 11 Kids To Do Chores (Without A Fight)
Doubling Down With The Derricos is TLC’s newest reality show that features a large family. Deon Dericco and his wife, Karen Derrico, have 14 children, but when the current episodes were filmed, the youngest three had not been born yet. On YouTube, a clip was posted that shows exactly how the parents get their adorable army to do chores without a fight.
Doubling Down With The Derricos: Structure and Routine Is Paramount
Prior to the premiere, the TLC Go app posted a special inside look of Doubling Down With The Derricos. It showed that structure and routine is necessary. If that doesn’t exist, then nothing else will fall into place. Line-ups, counting heads, order of sequence, etc. makes managing life with 11 children easier.
Multiples Help and Learn From Each Other On TLC Doubling Down With The Derricos
On the YouTube video clip, Karen explains that one big positive of having multiples is that they help and learn from each other. This includes helping around the house. She explained,
“One thing that helps with having multiples is that they help each other navigate chores and duties around the house. And they learn from each other.”
Doubling Down With The Derricos: Consistency And Chores
The Derricos do not waver when it comes to consistency (no matter how tired they are). The kids know what to expect and what is expected of them. In fact, we have seen that the children don’t fight or argue with their parents over household duties. During the premiere, one of the younger children started taking the trash after watching the older kids do it each day. They have learned that certain chores are always done around the same time each day, just like eating dinner and brushing their teeth.
The Derrico Family: Bedtime Routine, Storytime and Prayer
There are two times that are the most chaotic and stressful for parents everywhere. Getting ready for school and bedtime. When it comes to getting 11 children ready for bed, Deon and Karen use routine and order of sequence.
First, everyone goes upstairs to brush their teeth. Karen uses firm, yet loving encouragement to get the kids into a bedroom where they’ll have storytime. They all gather around and sing a song to help remember the parts of a book, Then, Karen reads a story and afterward, Deon leads the family in prayer. Dad asks his children the person to pray for the most is their mother. Then, it’s into bed, eyes closed and lights out.
It’s quite amazing to watch how streamlined and orderly everything is in the Derrico family. While some of us struggle with just two kids, Deon and Karen shows us how they succeed with 11 (soon to be 14)! It seems that we can learn a lot from this family.
