The characters on The Walking Dead don’t use the word “zombie” to describe the monsters in the post-apocalyptic world. These undead creatures roam the earth to feast on human beings. It’s obvious that these monsters are called “zombies,” but the word isn’t used on the show.

Why don’t the characters on The Walking Dead refer to these creatures as “zombies”? They have been called everything else – biters, geeks, lurkers, monsters, roamers, the infected, and “Muertos,” the Spanish word for “dead.” But in the ten seasons of The Walking Dead the word “zombie” has never been uttered. Why?

Robert Kirkman, the executive producer and man behind the Walking Dead comic books, has a good reason for that. He spoke to Conan O’Brien on his late-night show. Kirkman revealed that leaving the word “zombie” out of The Walking Dead universe was a deliberate move.

“Well, zombie lore is very popular,” Kirkman exclaimed. “We wanted to avoid that notion of, ‘Hey, why doesn’t that character just shooting that zombie in the head because it saw all those movies I saw. We wanted to kind of give you a sense that The Walking Dead takes place in a universe where zombie fiction doesn’t exist.”

The reason why the word “zombie” isn’t used because the word doesn’t even exist in the universe. If no such creature was ever used in pop culture, it’s unlikely that they would come to the same conclusion that we do in the real world.

“No one inside The Walking Dead has seen a [George Romero] movie, so they can’t get the rules from that,” Kirkman continued. “It felt like having people not use that word would kind of separate it from that, make it a little bit more clear.”

Season 10 of The Walking Dead airs on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET. It will also end earlier than anticipated on April 5 with Episode 15. The Walking Dead has already been renewed for an 11th season.
