Former Nickelodeon Boss Launches New Content Studio Called MiMoFor Kids
Nickelodeon veteran Cyma Zarghami has launched a new production firm and consultancy called MiMO Studio, which is focused on developing original movies that she knows will be kid-friendly and family-friendly. Zarghami spent most of her career overseeing Nickelodeon. Now she’s ready to strike out on her own. She stepped down from her position of President of Nickelodeon operations at the company once known as Viacom in 2018. She returned to the entertainment business by focusing on creating more kid-friendly content.
“I think kids under 11 are looking for something new to fall in love with,” Zarghami said in an interview with Variety. “I’ve had some success sin that department.”
Zarghami Launches New Content Studio After Leaving Nickelodeon
In 1985, she started working for Nickelodeon as a scheduling clerk. Over 30 years, she became one of the biggest leaders in kid’s television in the U.S. Nickelodeon introduced kids to Dora the Explorer, Henry Danger, iCarly, PAW Patrol, and SpongeBob SquarePants during her helm. Now, she’s working on a new series called The Kid Who Only Hit Homers, which is a live-action film based on the popular children’s book series by Matt Christopher. However, the MiMO version features a female lead and adds a fresh element to the 1972 story of a young teen pitcher Sylvester Coddmeyer III.
Zarghami said that the series “has been around for a long time, and one of the things that has been very liberating for me is the idea that I’m not necessarily trying to serve the broadest possible audience.” She believes that both families and kids will be interested in this new story, saying that it’s focused on “good family values and sweet emotional stories.”
Will MiMo Give Disney Channel And Nickelodeon A Run For Their Money
MiMO is interested in developing five other properties that will vary from animation to live-action content to pre-school shows, she says. The studio wants to create family-friendly projects that keep the child’s sensibility in mind. Zarghami understands that children are curious about the world around them and want to see more “multicultural” characters. She wants to focus on the “TV movie” format, which is similar to the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon as well as new streaming platforms, as per Deadline.
Disney Channel achieved success with made-for-TV movies such as the Descendants and Zombies franchises. Nickelodeon attracted an audience with the hour-long musical, Henry Danger. Zarghami feels that diversity is also important, in front of and behind the camera.
“I want to make a commitment to making sure that it is as rich and multicultural as it possibly can be because it makes for the best storytelling.” MiMO Studios does not have a release date.
